
HyLICAL was recently presented at the 16th International Conference on Hydrogen Production (ICH2P 2025), held at the University of Craiova, Romania.
Representing the project, Energy Policy Group, one of HyLICAL’s 14 partners, contributed to discussions on improving the energy efficiency of hydrogen liquefaction processes — a key challenge for scaling hydrogen technologies in Europe.
During the event, Alexandru Ciocan and Noah Murray shared insights into how HyLICAL is addressing this challenge, focusing on reducing the cost of liquefied hydrogen while enabling large-scale market uptake.
Addressing a key barrier to hydrogen deployment
Hydrogen liquefaction remains an energy-intensive process, directly impacting the economic viability of liquid hydrogen as an energy carrier. Improving efficiency is therefore critical to unlocking its full potential.
At ICH2P 2025, discussions highlighted the importance of:
- Enhancing system efficiency across liquefaction processes
- Reducing costs to support large-scale deployment
- Developing infrastructure for hydrogen transport and storage
Supporting heavy-duty transport and long-distance hydrogen use
A key focus was the role of liquid hydrogen in heavy-duty transport, as well as its potential as an energy vector for long-distance hydrogen transport.
These discussions emphasised the need for integrated solutions combining technology, infrastructure, and policy frameworks to enable scalable and cost-effective hydrogen systems.
